Here are some interesting facts about our amazing teachers including:
Flute & Piano
Kathryn is one of our Directors at Inspire Arts Academy. She holds a degree in Flute Performance from the University of Victoria and has been teaching and performing Flute and Piano full time for the past 17 years. Kathryn's passion is to make music a life long part of her students lives by allowing them to have fun and enjoy learning new music while teaching them to communicate in their own musical voice. She also encourages ensemble playing from chamber music to orchestral performances and hopes to develop a rich ensemble program at Inspire Arts. Kathryn specializes in preparing students for auditions, festivals and Royal Conservatory of Music Exams up to the ARCT level. Inspire Arts Academy is the fruition of her dream to bring the very best of instructors together in a creative and energized environment that enhances the musical experience for the community of Surrey.
Voice and Piano
Paula is one of our Directors at Inspire Arts Academy. She has been a full time teacher in our community for the past 11 years with a wait list of students. Paula holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia with a major in Opera Performance. Paula has performed for numerous Fringe Festivals, in Edmonton and Athabasca Alberta; as Rose Maurrant in Kurt Weill’s “Street Scene” at the Arts Club, and she has performed with Vancouver’s Sing-along Messiah. Inspire Arts Academy is the realization of her long-time vision to create an encouraging environment for students and Instructors to flourish, nurture talents and raise the bar for Performing Arts.
Trumpet, Trombone, Piano and Voice
Elizabeth comes to Inspire with a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet performance from UBC and is a Registered Music Teacher. She has been a Church Music Director for 25+ years, and brings with her 30+ years private teaching experience that includes Exam, Festival and Recital preparation. Elizabeth enjoys teaching all ages, has successful and positive experience working with special needs students such as blindness or autism. Elizabeth’s philosophy is that Music teaching is about inspiring a lifelong passion for music, and that along the way students learn discipline, skills, coordination and the joy of striving for perfection.
Susanna obtained her Music Degree from the Georgian Music College for study in Piano, Chamber Music, Music Theory and Musical Pedagogy (the science of teaching). She has been passionate about teaching since instructing her first students while still in College. “I love teaching all ages and levels of piano. I customize my lessons based on the needs and goals of my students, also passionate in guiding my students to achieve their potential and discover the artistry of musical expression through natural technique.” Susanna brings over 30 years of successful teaching experience in classical piano performance to Inspire Arts Academy.

Piano, Clarinet & Saxophone
Braeden graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Kwantlen Polytechnic University with a major in Jazz Piano and Saxophone. Braeden is currently working towards his PDP (Teachers degree) and is an active and avid local performer. His patient and cheerful nature make his classes a positive and motivating atmosphere, encouraging confidence and developing a life-long love of music.
Violin & Piano
Laurel has been teaching Violin in our community for the past 13 years. Laurel was educated at the Royal Conservatory of Music (with Honours) and holds her degree from the University of British Columbia. Laurel brings the students of Inspire her extensive training in the International Suzuki Method as well as Music Theory and the Royal Conservatory of Music Exam preparation.
Drama and Film/TV Acting
Shayn’s resume and work ethic are definitely a bonus to Inspire Arts Academy’s Acting department, but his warm and friendly personal character and charm make him a true asset! Shayn is an active working Canadian character actor. He has had many roles in television and film since 1996, the most notable of which is probably that of Spencer Martin in the TV Series Eureka and co-starring role of Tom Stewart in the Disney Air Bud movies. Other noteworthy television shows Shayn has been part of include Smallville, Supernatural and the X Files.

Drama, Film/TV Acting and Musical Theatre
Alyssa has her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from SFU and was the winner of the Betty Lambert Memorial Prize in 2012. Alyssa is a working actor with supporting and principal roles in the different aspects of film, television, commercial and theatre. With experience Directing and Set Organization, Alyssa is a welcome addition to our cast of amazing Instructors in the Musical Theatre Program at Inspire.

Guitar, Bass, Upright Bass
Colin is an accomplished musician with a Bachelor of Music from VCC. He has performed with many prestigious musicians, including three-time Juno nominee Francois Houle, John Korsrud, Bryan Deans and the Plastic Acid Orchestra, Steve Danielsen, and multiple Juno winner Hugh Fraser. Currently, Colin performs in venues around the Lower Mainland with his prolific progressive rock band Air Stranger. His enthusiasm encourages students to achieve their full potential, and his versatility in a variety of styles of music enable him to relate well to any student.

Voice & Singing Coach
Karen has been teaching classical and contemporary Voice and Performance, Music Theory and Audition Prep for over 20 years locally. She has experience teaching ESL, special needs and students in the autism spectrum. Karen has performed live on the main Disneyland Stage in Disneyland Anaheim, and participated in Behind the Scene workshops at Disney Studios, as well as extensive experience with community performances and showcases throughout Metro Vancouver. She has recorded back up vocals for the band Mary’s Gunns album Smuggler’s Cabaret, and appeared in Marianas Trench music video for Pop 101. Many of Karen’s students have gone on to success, including one student who has gone on to the Boston production of Billy Elliot.

Drums and Percussion
We are very happy to add Chris to our impressive list of Inspiring Instructors! Chris comes to Inspire Arts Academy from KPU’s Music program. He shares an emphasis on quality, a passion for teaching, and a desire to play music continuously. Chris is an accomplished Jazz Combo and Big Band Drummer, Wind Symphony Percussionist –including Timpani, Xylophone, Marimba, Vibraphone, Djembe, Bongos, and Cymbals. For the past 3 years, Chris has enjoyed being the drummer for Lowkey –a Jazz Quintet, performing throughout the lower mainland.

Clarinet, Saxophone and Piano
A graduate of McGill's Schulich School of Music and the University of Ottawa, Vancouver clarinetist Krystal Morrison serves as the second clarinet with the Vancouver Island Symphony. Having begun her musical career with the Canadian military, she made her debut on Ottawa’s Parliament Hill as a musician in the daily changing of the guard ceremony. Since then she has had the opportunity to play for a wide variety of ensembles across North America and Europe. An enthusiastic teacher and student, Krystal has taught at music schools across Canada, from conservatories to Cadet Camps. She is also currently a student at the Vancouver School of Alexander Technique and writing the thesis for her Masters of Musicology. Additionally, Krystal has a passion for Argentine tango and can be heard locally performing with Vancouver's Orquesta Paraguas.
Voice, Piano, Guitar, and Musical Theatre
Tristan began his post-secondary music education at Capilano University where he obtained diplomas in piano, voice and conducting. He later graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in Voice from University of Victoria, where he received the Bea Scott Voice Scholarship in 2014. He was also the recipient of the City of White Rock Award for Music in 2010. Aside from his vocal studies, Tristan is an accomplished pianist, organist and guitarist, having received instruction in classical and jazz at both universities. He has sung with several highly acclaimed vocal ensembles such as Laudate Singers, Vox Humana, and more recently the Vancouver Opera Chorus. Furthermore, Tristan has been actively teaching and performing for many years, having appeared as a tenor soloist with the UVic Orchestra and Chorus, UVic Chamber Singers, and the Vancouver Bach Choir.
Guitar, Ukulele and Bass
Josh has been teaching music in the greater Vancouver area since 2004. He has earned Bachelor and Master degrees in music from UBC, and was a recipient of the Mildred Johnson Scholarship in Music and a Graduate Entrance Scholarship. He also studied guitar at the 2009 International Guitar Symposium in Iserlohn, Germany.
For his lessons, he employs a wealth of crafty stratagems to make music learning more accessible. Helping students find material that they love—anything from a favourite song to a catchy theme tune—is a top priority. It is his hope that this combination of practical pedagogy and inspiring repertoire will allow students to achieve their musical goals while having as much fun as possible.
